Research Systems and Support

The teams under Research Systems and Support work together to support MIT's research community. They work collectively to engage with research administrators, faculty, and other Institute stakeholders within the research community by providing system support, education, reporting, and data analysis for research and compliance tools.

Research Administration Support Team

The Support team, in collaboration with business partners across the Institute, provides support, education, and resources for the processes, policies, and best practices in research administration.

In addition to responding to individual requests, the team develops guidance and hosts multiple education sessions.

    Kim Mann

Kim Mann has led the RA Support team since 2011, setting the direction for the team based on Institute priorities and hearing from the research administration community. She joined MIT in 1996, working in administrative positions in the Center for Transportation and Logistics before joining the then-Office of Sponsored Programs as a contract administrator. After over a decade in support, she knows that solving issues effectively will positively impact research administrators in the increasingly complex field of research administration.

    Ian Cariolo

Ian Cariolo joined the RA Support team in 2014, during the initial rollout of Kuali Coeus. His interest in systems grew out of his prior work in research administration at MIT, starting as a subcontracts closeout specialist in 1998 before becoming an assistant contract administrator in 2008. Following the rollout of KC, Ian has been involved in the maintenance of existing systems and the development of new ones, always looking for ways to improve the work of research administrators at MIT.

    Rosemary Hanlon

Rosemary Hanlon began at MIT in 1987, holding various roles in the DLCIs before moving into central research administration. After becoming a contract administrator in the then-Office of Sponsored Programs in 2004, she took on a dual role of being on the help desk for the Coeus Consortium, finally joining the RA Support team in 2016. Through her career, she's been on the forefront of everything from MIT’s first electronic proposal submissions to the development of CAC Connect and COUHES Connect.

    Joe Murphy

Joe Murphy joined RA Support in 2024, after working as an administrator for the Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA) for over 17 years. Both in CBA and now in RA Support, he wants to help research administrators understand the big picture of research administration at MIT. Seeking that broader perspective himself, he earned a master's in research administration from Johns Hopkins University in 2024.

    Carole Trainor

Carole Trainor joined MIT in 2008, first working on business systems with IS&T before moving to the Office of the Vice President for Research in 2011. As a firm believer that MIT's greatest asset is its people, she ensures the community has access to the self-directed learning and other training they need to do their best work.

Research Administration Reporting Team

The Reporting team analyzes research administration and compliance data. They develop and disseminate reports for the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Institute, and federal government reporting requirements. The team works closely with VPR and MIT senior leadership teams and colleagues across the Institute to ensure consistent reporting of data.
