Developing a PIER plan: resources and info session
February 7, 2024
Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to share new resources to help in preparing proposals to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and to invite you to an MIT information session on February 27, 1:00–2:00 PM (Add to calendar / Zoom link). As a principal investigator (PI) with current or pending DOE funding, or as an administrator, you may benefit from these resources or share them with your colleagues.

Background on the DOE’s PIER plan requirement

Starting last fiscal year, the DOE is requiring each proposal submission to the DOE Office of Science and DOE National Labs to include a specific description of the activities and strategies applicants will incorporate into the sponsored project to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. This part of the proposal is known as a PIER plan (PIER = Promoting Inclusive and Equitable Research). The requirement applies to both new proposals and renewals, and, importantly, the PIER plan must be tailored to the specific proposed project.

Resources and support

I have heard many PIs and research administrators ask for greater support in navigating the DOE’s PIER plan requirement, and help is available. Please consider drawing upon the following resources: In addition, you should feel welcome to reach out to researchdev@mit.edu or your RAS Contract Administrator for further support.

Information session

To further address your questions, on February 27, 2024, from 1:00PM to 2:00PM, MIT Research Administration Services (RAS) will host a virtual information session on PIER plans. The Zoom meeting is tailored to inform and equip local administrators, particularly research administrators, human resources officers, DEI officers, and directors of administration and finance, with the resources and perspective to confidently support PIs in developing effective proposals. Registration is not required; please add it to your calendar and join us on Zoom.

Further resources

The PIER plan materials are part of a suite of resources recently created to support proposal development and research administration, including materials on broaders impact statements, under-recovery, early-career funding, and subawards, as well as a guide to research administration resources and training. Suggestions for additional resources are always welcome.

Sincerely,

Anne White
Vice Provost and Associate Vice President for Research Administration
