Environmental Health and Safety
As part of a research proposal, funding agencies may require researchers to provide information related to environmental health and safety (EHS). Typically these requirements come from sponsors such as the Department of Energy (DOE), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Department of the Interior (DOI). Each agency’s forms are unique, but the questions they ask may relate to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance findings, citations by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA), waste or pollution that will be generated by the project, or potential use of land, water or air resources and their impact.
MIT’s EHS Office assists researchers in completing and certifying the information on such forms. EHS should be contacted as early as possible by researchers or department administrators that are preparing a proposal to allow time to gather the necessary information.
